Our 2016 Russian River Valley Reserve Chardonnay has a beautiful light straw color with a golden edge. The wine opens with exotic sandalwood and cardamom followed by toasted bread, lemon zest, green apple, nougat, tropical fruit, stone fruit, minerals, and lush cream. The palate is warm and weighty with vanilla, toast, stone fuit, pineapple, orange zest, and Granny Smith and Golden Delicious apple.
This Reserve offers mouthwatering acidity with good structure and a long, beautiful finish of sweet tropical fruit, lemon curd, and grilled pineapple. It reflects the best of what Russian River Valley fruit can offer. Pair with seared scallops with green pea ravioli and lemon thyme butter sauce, seared halibut with warm herb vinaigrette, or lobster bisque.
2016 was a great growing season for white varietals. It began with a dry spring. A few light showers and cool temperature during bloom reduced crops levels. The ripening season offered moderate daytime temperatures of 88-90 degree F, giving full fruit expression. Cool nights and foggy mornings made for a low, gentle ripening, and maintaining brilliant minerality. Hand-harvesting the fruit fro this wine began on September 12 and finished on September 29. Brix at harved ranged from a most desirable 23.6 to 26.5 degrees.
All of the fruit for this wine went directly to the press in whole clusters to safegaurd the pure fruit flavors of the field. We barrel-fermented 100% of this Chardonnay and followed that with secondary malolactic fermentations of 95% of the wine to add richness and creaminess. We then aged the wine for 11 months in 100% French oak barrels, 55% of which were new and 15% one year old.
